The dairy industry is a giant boasting impressive figures: over 100 million producers worldwide, 800 thousand of which are responsible for 44% of the world’s total cow’s milk production. There is an imbalance between production areas and consumption areas: Oceania, EU, USA and Canada produce more milk than the market can absorb; China, Africa, East Europa and Central America, on the other hand, show a severe deficit. At the industrial level the dairy sector is a magnet for major economic interests, as testified by the response the brand new exhibition Dairytech has had so far in terms of exhibitor applications. The fair will take place in conjunction with IPACK-IMA and will flank the other “vertical” show in Hall 5/7 of Fieramilano from May 19th to 23rd.
Dairytech has been chosen by major dairy associations: Assocaseari (the Association of dairy retailers) and FIL-IDF (The International Dairy Federation), Italian Committee.
In addition to companies’ stands, Dairytech will ensure increased visibility to the main players in this crucial sector for Made-in-Italy food by promoting meetings on industry economies. In particular, a meeting on the prospects for the entire production chain titled “Milk for the planet: 2015-2025” scheduled for Thursday May 21st is already attracting a great deal of interest. The event will feature world-class expert speakers and will be structured like a convention-roundtable with the moderation of Vincenzo Bozzetti, technical director emeritus of magazine “Milk”. The meeting will focus on outlining current and future scenarios of the demand and offer pyramids in the dairy industry.
The panel includes speeches by prominent dairy experts like FAO’s high representative Carolyn Opio, who will outline the trends, challenges and growth opportunities in the global milk industry; and Christophe Lafougère, CEO of GIRA, a company active in food & drink research and consulting, a regular speaker at major dairy events worldwide. One of the issues under discussion is sustainability, one of the central themes of the 2015 event including IPACK-IMA and its related exhibitions held in conjunction with the EXPO: how to match the world’s potential milk demand with issues like agricultural, environmental and economic sustainability? What will be the new balance between imports and exports? Experts will be called to provide answers to these and more questions in light of the significant differences in the demand for milk and dairy products across the world: in 2013 the countries with the highest consumption of cow’s milk for human nutrition included Ireland (142), Finland (131), Estonia (117), Australia (110) and the UK (105) (FIL-IDF 2013 data expressed in kg/per capita/year). The highest consumption of cheese is recorded in France (25.9), Iceland (25.2), Finland (24.7), Germany (24.3), Italy (20.7) compared to a global average of 3 kg/per capita/year.
Summing the consumption of milk and cheese, the highest consuming countries (2013 data) include Finland (378), Iceland (349.3), Estonia (334.5), France (313), Germany (296.8), against a global average of 100 kg/per capita/year.
