MARINE LITTER: MAPPING THE RISK AND SOLUTIONS
Marine litter is becoming a serious problem for the Mediterranean, a threat for both the ecosystems that characterize it and for the economy of the populations who depend on it. An analysis by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation says that in 2050 the plastic in the oceans will weigh more than the fish.
A problem already spotlighted by Ecomondo in 2016, and proposed once more this year with the conference held this morning Marine litter: preventions measures and management for a more productive sea, organized by Legambiente, Ecomondo Technical Scientific Committee, ENEA, University of Bologna, University of Siena, Cluster Blue Growth and Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The proceedings were chaired by Stefano Ciafani, general manager of Legambiente, who stressed at the opening the absolute importance of the speakers taking part, who included the world’s top experts on the topic, such as Francois Galgani, of IFREMER, Cristina Fossi, University of Siena, and Nicolas Kalogerakis, who provided an insight of the phenomenon at global level. Eight million tons of litter, mainly plastic (80%) are to be found in the Earth’s seas and oceans, 700 tons in the Mediterranean area, as was reported by Francois Galgani, who has studied the phenomenon for years. 1,400 species of fish are hit, 263 million euros the annual cost at European level. Something can and must be done. In his speech, Professor Fabio Fava, chairman of the Ecomondo Technical Scientific Committee, stressed, “It is necessary to take action in an integrated manner, involving various parties to remove the plastic in the sea and it is necessary to understand how to exploit what is collected. There is something to be done and it’s recycling in a careful manner.”
During the conference, the results were also presented of the first studio on the recyclability of beach litter promoted by the Institute for the Promotion of Recycled Plastics with Legambiente and ENEA. Cotton buds, fragments, personal hygiene items and packaging, pellets, caps and drinking straws. These are the most common litter items on Italian beaches, mainly due to bad habits on behalf of consumers and enterprises. This type of litter could be recycled, with both economic and environmental advantages. The samples were taken by the technicians of Legambiente’s Green Schooner on two beaches on the Tyrrhenian coast: the Coccia di Morto beach in the province of Rome and the Feniglia beach in the province of Grosseto. Of the total waste found, the percentage of plastic in both cases was over 90% (slightly higher than the national average, which is 80%, according to the data of the survey on beach litter carried out by Legambiente on the other Italian beaches). During the conference at Ecomondo, Giorgio Zampetti, Legamebiente’s scientific chief, also announced that the association has just "deposited the bill which bans the sale of ‘cotton buds’ at the Chamber of Deputies.” An initiative of the president of the Environment Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Ermete Realacci, spurred by Legambiente and MareVivo campaigns. Loris Pietrelli, of ENEA, said, “We calculated how many cotton buds we could find in a day currently: a hundred million, along Italy’s coasts. Placed one beside each other, they could form a needle able to reach the centre of the earth.”
On the issue of marine litter, the proposal of Castalia was also presented at Ecomondo. It is a selective collection device formed by a polyethylene barrier that traps and collects floating and semi-submerged plastic that arrives from the rivers.
EUROPEAN WEEK FOR WASTE REDUCTION: ITALY TOP IN EUROPE AGAIN!
Italia is once again top in Europe as far as the prevention of waste is concerned. In fact, 4,422 actions have been reported in Italy (3 more than 2016) for the ninth edition of the SERR - Settimana Europea per la Riduzione dei Rifiuti (European Week for Waste Reduction), which will begin all over Europe on Saturday 18th November and finish on Sunday 26th November. Also on the continental podium, France (1,798 actions) and Catalonia (815 actions). This is the information that emerged from the official presentation held today at Ecomondo, in “Piazza delle Utilities” of Utilitalia, the federation that gathers together water, energy and environment service managers.
Analyzing the data in detail, in 2017 single action developers grew, increasing by over 45% compared to last year. The school category is the one that had the greatest increase in participants, who more than doubled.
The specific theme of the 2017 edition is “Re-use and repair: give it a new life”, developed in approximately 91% of the actions registered. The majority of the actions also face the issue of waste reduction and prevention upstream (90%); aspects connected with source-segregated collection and special cleaning of the territories have also been taken into consideration.
The European Week for Waste Reduction is the major and widest campaign for informing European citizens and making them more aware of the impact of the production of waste on the environment. In Italy the EWWR is promoted by a national promotion committee formed by CNI Unesco as permanent guest, the Ministry for the Environment and Land & Sea Protection, Utilitalia, ANCI, the Metropolitan Cities of Turin and Rome, Legambiente, AICA and technical partners E.R.I.C.A. Soc. Coop. and Eco dalle Città.
The 2017 edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction has been made possible thanks to the contribution of CONAI and the six Cycle Consortia: CiAl, Comieco, Corepla, Coreve, Ricrea and Rilegno.
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC WASTE: OBJECTIVES ACHIEVED AND FUTURE GOALS
Source-segregated collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Italy is growing by 6% in 2017. At Ecomondo, during the WEEE Forum, an insight was given on EU objectives and what Italy must do to meet them. The first of the objectives (4 kg per capita of domestic was has been exceeded. Another more ambitious objective requires the collection of 45% of the material put on the market in the three years prior to the year of assessment. Italia ended 2016 with a percentage of treated waste of 41% for domestic WEEE, 4% below the European objective. The WEEE coordination Centre also described the situation of the plants in Italy. Considering approximately 358,000 tons handled in Italy, the majority (61%) is treated in plants located in the north, while the remainder is divided between Central Italy (75,000 tons) and South & Islands (65,000). 3,045 facilities are registered on the CdC Raee Web site: 1,968 in the North, 522 in Central regions and 555 in the South and Islands. As is established by the current agreement on treatment, the 13th November is the deadline for accreditation on behalf of the plants operating with collective systems. To date, of the 91 accredited plants (46 in the North, 20 in the Centre and 25 between South and Islands), only 25 have already finished the accreditation procedure foreseen by the new Agreement and will be operational by 14th November.

THE NEW ABANDONED RAILWAY TRAVEL ATLAS
Converting disused railway lines into footpaths and cycle tracks, for travelling in the direction of sustainable mobility and the exploitation of the country’s natural, historic and cultural heritage. This is the gist of the new “Atlante di viaggio lungo le ferrovie dismesse” by FS Italiane and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, presented today at Ecomondo by Claudia Cattani, President of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. The book provides a census of the characteristic stretches of unused railway lines, which total approximately 1,500 km. A collection that, as of this year, is enriched with information on the countless natural beauties and landscapes to be found along disused railway lines. Participants in the presentation included Paolo Gandolfi, member of the 9th Commission for Transport and Telecommunications of the Chamber of Deputies and proposer of the new framework law on cyclability, Paolo Piacentini, Directorate-General of Tourism MiBACT, Giulio Senes, President of Greenways European Association, and Ilaria Maggiorotti, head of Functional Assets with RFI.
MIMMO CALOPRESTI’S FILM “IMMONDEZZA” ON THE FISE ASSOAMBIENTE STAND
Director Mimmo Calopresti’s film “Immondezza” was also at Ecomondo. A documentary that tells the story of “Keep Clean and Run”, a journey in Southern Italy among beauty and waste. 350 km of breathtaking panoramas, along roads and paths, from the Vesuvius to Etna, which Roberto Cavallo, President of the AICA - International Association for Environmental Communication - ran, accompanied by numerous nationally famous sports testimonials, to carry work clearing waste abandoned along the route. After the previews in Milan, Kuala Lampur and Barcelona and an award won in Los Angeles, the film was presented today at Ecomondo on the FISE Assoambiente stand.
